Can You Still Buy LifeProof Cases?
Yes, but only as leftover stock. LifeProof cases are sealed, rugged smartphone shells built to keep water, dirt and dust, snow, and drops away from the phone inside, and new LifeProof-branded production has ended. The reason the sealed flagship was the one kept is spelled out in the 2022 announcement: Otter Products called it the No. 1-selling waterproof case in the U.S., citing NPD Group data from January 2018 to January 2022. The drop-only series overlapped with the parent’s own Commuter, Symmetry, and Defender cases, so they had less reason to continue.
What the Waterproof and Drop Claims Actually Mean
The current successor is rated for submersion in up to 2 meters of water for 1 hour (IP68), and the maker says it withstands drops five times the military standard, MIL-STD-810G Method 516.6. The company’s own LifeProof guide lists the same 2-meter, one-hour rating for the original line.
An IP code is the IEC 60529 ingress protection rating. The first digit covers solids such as dust, the second covers liquids. A 6 means dustproof, and an 8 means continuous immersion under conditions the maker defines, which is why the depth and time always ride along with the number.
The spec behind the drop claim is MIL-STD-810G, a U.S. Department of Defense environmental test standard, and the part most people misread is that Method 516.6 is a test procedure, not a certification. The case maker runs the drops and reports the result. No independent lab issues a pass you can look up, so treat the height figure as a marketing claim.
Real water is harder than a lab tank: chlorine, salt, sunscreen, and sand in the gasket channel all work against the seal. Makers generally exclude liquid damage to the phone itself from case coverage, so a leak is your loss.

How to Spot Counterfeit or Mislabeled Stock
LifeProof’s own counterfeit guide boiled the check down to four things: price, place, packaging, and product.
- Price. A deep discount on a supposedly new sealed FRĒ from an unknown seller is the first warning sign. Clearance markdowns at a named retailer are a different story.
- Place. The brand sold through authorized retailers and called Craigslist, eBay, and swap-meet listings “questionable, at best.”
- Packaging. Genuine units shipped in complete retail packaging with printed instructions. Misspellings or poor grammar on the box suggest a fake.
